Sagis as Chick-magnets?

December 26, 2006 · 2 Comments

This is what I got to hear yesterday.Few friends from school met over dinner. In the conversation that followed a friend said that sagis are good flirts. Its the zodiac. Now I am a proud sagi. Refer any Lynda Goodmann or Goldmann book (book on sun signs)and you can know me well, I have most of the traits. But I feel betrayed when I realize that is one trait I am not good at.Honestly I am bad at it.There are many examples to proove this.

My dear friend quoted the example of her brother. She in fact refered to him as a chick-magnet.Why me lord, why me? is what I told myself. Why so few girls in IIT?And why me in Ghy. IITB too would have been just good or atleast opportunities to get better.

I recollect a  batchmate from campus also a fellow anchor for the event “Crush” in Alcher (Cult fests in IITs are for Non IIT females) making a note that yours truly is too sober a guy to be an anchor for events like Crush(The title of the event says it all). I have let some opportunities to groom myself slip through my hands too.

This is the IITian born and bred in Bbay and betrayed by the Stars writing.

Bid 2 Win

December 26, 2006 · 8 Comments

This contest on Zee Tv caught my eye. It was being anchored by Vir Das, that cartoon who mocks every soul making an appearance on CNBC.The one-liner for the contest is Bid Low,Bid Unique, Bid Now! Very interesting. It works something like;they have a product on auction. The product yesterday was a HP laptop priced at Rs. 55,000.You have to bid the lowest. Also it needs to be unique.Say for example two individuals bid it for one paisa and a third one does it for 23 paise. The one with 23 paise gets it as it is unique. Also the lower bid wins. They encourage you to bid more than once,in other words they encourage you to minimize your chances of winning at a lower price.

I liked the concept. Bid low and bid unique. The more the number of bids the more the likelihood of the winning bid getting higher. The bid that wins has to be unique.I hope the contest draws many participants lest they suffer loses.

This field is very creative.Include advertising in this list too. Creative minds at their best. I enjoy watching ads on channels like CNBC,NDTV viz HSBC, Hutch, Center Shock etc. Amazing ads. I also got to see the project of my cousin who is into mass media. She had to picturize a song through still photographs. She selected the remix version(slow) of “Aao Huzoor tumko, sitaron mein le chaloon” and the photographs that she clicked involved people doping, smoking, trying hookah, boozing and the likes. The concept was really good.

JLo meets KKo

December 20, 2006 · 4 Comments

This is JLT, just like that.

It is a dialogue in the movie Bollywood Hollywood; Jennifer Lopez meets Karishma Kapoor. It could also have been JLo meets Lolo. Continuing in the same line of thought if the movie were to be made now the dialogue could be JLo meets ARa (Ms. Rai). Ra sounds entra/gult or KKa for Katrina Kaif or whatever. I realize that if I proceed there is a fear of me getting qualified as a member of the khatta community of IITG, Iyer and Ponker are proud members of which.

Anyways, on a lighter side as a final yr student some “wisdom” I like to share: Sem results(SPI) have an inverse relationship with the efforts put in. I did study in the first sem. I expected good grades and all I got was a 8.31. The second sem had me devoting more time to studies as there was no spending time in the seniors’ hostel (read ragging), Inter, Techniche etc. and my SPI dropped to 8.09. In the second year I lost interest. In the next three semesters marks too did not drive me. I devoted fewer hours to acads.I do not know why and how things changed. In the sixth Semester my SPI was 8.22. This sem I surprised myself. I started studying on the eve of the paper. Guess what,my SPI is 8.74. Believe me if you can, I can’t. I also moved upwards from a CPI of 7.99.

I have realized that studying and getting good marks are independent of each other. In the first year its important to study. If you manage to get grades that you expected or deserved continue your track. Else you need to work on learning to score marks (without malpractises) lest frustation creeps in. The progress chart is something like; in the first yr you study, in the second yr you start thinking about  numbers, in the third yr you start getting numbers and in the final yr you master the art. Unfortunately our education system sucks and marks is what people look at. Getting a good CPI is not sufficient proof of  your understanding of the subject. If you are willing enough to continue studying without good marks to show, trust me you should stick to your style.

This is one reason I do not wish to pursure higher studies six months from now;I have lost the zing to study.

And Im flying home tomorrow, need a break … mere maa di hathan diyan pakiyan rotiyaan khan nu bada hi jee karda hai.

Thought for the day: You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. -Steve Jobs .

At this moment I can see my dots getting connected :)

The First Chapter

December 18, 2006 · 4 Comments

On the night of 16th Decemebr 2006,memories of my experiences in Inter IIT sports meets flooded my mind. I have learnt a lot from soccer, courtesy our coach and the game itself.  But on-field there were only sob stories to narate. Nothing about Inter that could cheer me up in the days ahead. On the 17th was my last match for the Institute. We had lost the first two matches by a solitary goal, matches where we were the better team. But we did not know how to win. I was preparing for my last match with little expectations.

We created history the next day. The first chapter in the history of IITG football was just completed. It was the same old story being repeated till 15 minutes into the second half. Though we were the better team, we were trailing by two goals. However in the last twenty mins we scored not just one, not two but three goals. IITG beat IITD 3-2. We finished 5th overall.

Finally something to remember. It felt good. I was happy. The team had tasted success. And when veterans have to fight for a place in the starting eleven there is promise for a better and a more spirited performance. Go Guwahati!

Thought for the day: When the spirit rises and commands, the Gods are ready to obey.(Rohit, your comment was so apt)

P.S : This has been an injury free Inter too. The first year it was the absyss on the right foot, the second yr it was a ligament injury on the left ankle on-field, the third year it was the right hand.. this time I return home in one piece :)

The Last Supper

December 12, 2006 · 3 Comments

The 42nd Inter IIT sports meet starts tomorrow,13th December 2006. This is my fourth and the last meet and I am fortunate that IITG is hosting it for the first time. The football team sans two members had dinner today at the Amritsar Punjabi Dhaba. It was a treat by yours truly. The team spirit is at the peak.

I have to agree that we and especially I can’t afford to lose this time. Personally I am a bit nervous but yet can’t wait for the whistle to blow… Kanpur Im raring to go.

Thought for the day: At times winning is not the only thing, its everything.
